A well-known and popular christmas plant with large bracts in red, pink or white. Water moderately in autumn and winter and keep in good light in a minimum temperature of 13 degrees C (55 degrees F.) After the bracts die reduce the water supply and keep nearly dry for a few weeks. Then, in early spring, cut the stems back by two thirds, restart watering and move the plant into a temperature of around 18 degrees C ( 65 degrees F ). This will encourage the production of new growth, which is most attractive both in shape and in its clear green colour. Keep the plant in a light, sunny position and water freely.
It is difficult to make the plant produce its coloured bracts under average home conditions as to do so requires special treatment to control the day length - giving no artifical light after natural daylight hours from mid September to December. Howerver, even without its bracts, it makes a most handsome foliage plant.
Increase by cuttings of young shoots rooted in a propagator. |
